After School Programs
Informal Education

Through Without Walls: Bringing Youth-Led Informal Education into Jewish Supplementary Schools, Hashomer Hatzair North America developed an educational initiative that brought informal youth-led programming into formal Jewish learning settings.

Ignition Grantee Reflections: Impacts and Learnings
“Where are we now, what did we accomplish, and what have we learned?”

“With the grant, we stepped up to a new level that gave us a real sense that the work mattered and that we were on the right track. We created a vision for the program in the eyes and hearts of the movement; our commune is no longer central to it. All 20-somethings should grow up knowing that this is a program that exists. Without Walls’ goal will be to effectively train the local youth and principals towards an ongoing structure which will allow them to train each new generation of youth leaders.”

—Daniel Roth, Project Director

“The Congregation Agudath Israel Religious School loved the Hashomer Hatzair Without Walls program. The leaders engaged the students in an experiential lesson that left the students wanting more. The leaders presented an interactive, very organized program that was thought provoking and full of information.”

—Susan Werk, Educational Director, Congregation Agudath Israel; 2008 Covenant Award Recipient
