A Modern Chanukah Tale for the Ages

Now, a grandmother and granddaughter have collaborated to write and illustrate a children’s book to capture the solidarity that overtook the city of Billings, as residents across religions, ethnicities and races joined to push back the nascent forces of intolerance.
A Light in Every Window (Miniver Press, 2012), written by Josephine Baskin Minow, and illustrated by her granddaughter, Mira Singer, weighs in at just 27 pages.
But through simple verse and drawings, it captures an inspiring, true-life story that drew international attention then, and continues to inspire today.
That December, a majority of Billings citizens became one with their Jewish neighbors and displayed Chanukah lights in their windows, as modern day symbols of hope and perseverance reigned over darkness and hatred.
“This warm-hearted tale will go down in history, for the love it embraced is surely no mystery,” the authors write in one of their concluding verses.
It is a modern-day Chanukah story addressing timeless themes within the context of modern struggles. This intergenerational pairing conveys serious issues with simple understanding and hope.
