TORONTO – A $149,685 grant over three years to Canada Israel Experience (CIE) – a department of UIA Federations Canada dedicated to strengthening Jewish identity among young adults through travel to Israel and follow-up programming – will go towards the Birthright Alumni Community (BAC) Leadership Project.
The funding will allow BAC to enhance a training program for Birthright Israel trip leaders and develop a social action and community-building initiative for participants following the trip.

CIE officials said this enhanced leadership-training curriculum will focus on advocacy, public speaking and group facilitation skills, as well as a mentorship program to provide them with immediate sources of support, information and resources.

Another aspect is the creation of a Social Entrepreneur program through which trip alumni will network with lay and professional Jewish leaders drawn from corporate and non-profit organizations. Each participant will plan and implement a community project benefitting, for example, the environment or communities in distress.

“The BAC Leadership Project is about engaging Birthright Israel alumni in building a community that speaks to them and their generation,” said Shauna Waltman, CIE alumni and outreach manager. “The key to connecting the Birthright Israel generation is providing them with opportunities that speak to them.”

The grant is one of 16, totaling $1.4 million, that were announced recently by the New York-based Covenant Foundation as part of its mission to support, advance and recognize excellence and impact in Jewish educational settings.
