Israel Folkdance Festival to Honor ’01 Covenant Awardee Lorraine Posner Arcus

Boston, MA, Jan 25, 2011—Lorraine Posner Arcus, an acclaimed Israeli dance educator, an advocate for Israeli dance as a key part of Jewish culture and education, and a 2001 Covenant Awardee, will be honored at the Israel Folkdance Festival in Boston, March 13th.

The Festival, now in its 35th year, is one of the most prominent events on the Jewish cultural calendar, and each year honors a person who has dedicated time and effort to the Festival itself, and has transformed and given voice to the Israeli dance community.

Now in her 36th and final year as director of the Israeli dance program at Temple Israel in Albany, NY, she has overseen its growth into a multi-faceted community dance and education initiative that has instilled a love and appreciation of Israeli dance in thousands of children, teens and adults. Her flagship teen performance group, Tzamarot, regularly performs at the Festival.

Her reach and reputation is national, as she has conducted Israeli dance leadership programs and workshops across the country, and is the author of a widely used teaching manual.

“Lorraine’s impact on the world of Israeli folk dance goes beyond her extraordinary talent as a choreographer,” said Bonnie Rubenstein, a member of the festival committee.

“She has transformed a community. Not only has Lorraine instilled a love of Israeli folkdance in perhaps thousand of students, but she nurtured and trained her high school students to teach in the community. By empowering her students, she ensured the continuity and continued growth of Israeli folkdance.”
