Day School Delegations Win RAVSAK Moot Beit Din Competition

New York, Apr 26, 2010—Student delegations from the Jewish Community High School of the Bay (San Francisco), the Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy (Bryn Mawr, PA), The WeberSchool (Atlanta), and Kehillah Jewish High School (Palo Alto) were the winning teams atRAVSAK's annual Moot Beit Din competition April 22 to 25 in Washington, DC.

Moot Beit Din, modeled on Moot Court programs in law schools, applies Jewish text to contemporary and compelling real life-situations, as students take a case or scenario, research precedents in Jewish law, write a detailed decision and defend it before a panel of judges. This year, students examined the permissibility of government torture in combatting terrorist organizations.

In addition to the winning delegations, teams from the San Diego Jewish Academy and the Tanenbaum Community Hebrew Academy of Toronto (Kimel Centre campus) won special recognition with "Judges' Choice" citations.

In all, 80 students from 21 schools participated in the Moot Beit Din and an accompanying Shabbaton. A Covenant Foundation grant is helping RAVSAK to enhance this initiative and extend it to more schools.
