Building on the Strengths...

It is with great pride that we present the winners of the 1995 Covenant Awards. Though each of them has a unique record of personal achievement, they share many of the strengths that distinguish them as representatives of the best in Jewish education. Their zeal has reached beyond their students to communities at large, building bridges between our past and our future. As teachers, organizers, and administrators, they affirm not just the ongoing vitality of Jewish learning; they testify to the rich tapestry of North American Jewish life in all its forms. While the presentation of these Awards gives us the opportunity to honor three special people, we hope that it will offer an occasion to encourage others in their footsteps.

We salute the Covenant Award winners, past, present, and future.

L'Shalom,

Susan Crown

In Memoriam Robert L. Adler 1919-1995

Robert 1. Adler served as the Founding Chairman of the Covenant Foundation's Board of Directors from 1990 until his sudden death in July 1995. Before assuming the chairmanship of the Covenant Board, Bob had already distinguished himself as a Jewish communal leader in numerous key positions at local, national, and international organizations. A past President of Beth Am, the-People's Synagogue in Chicago, he also served as Chairman and Director of the Jewish Federation-Jewish United Fund of Chicago and President of the National Jewish Welfare Board (now the JCC Association of North America), to name only three of the prestigious posts he held. He received many honors for his contributions, among them an Honorary Doctorate from Hebrew Union College and a Distinguished Service Award from the Wurzweiler School of Social Work of Yeshiva University. Bob led the Covenant Foundation with his characteristic warmth, wit, and skill, taking it from a wonderful idea and a few guidelines to an honor roll of 15 Covenant Award and 23 Covenant Grant recipients and bringing a new vigor and prestige to Jewish education. Not long before his death, he told a colleague that of all his work in the Jewish communal world he received the most pleasure and satisfaction from his work with the Covenant Foundation. We are honored to believe that.

We will dearly miss him.
