Building on the Strengths...

We are pleased to announce the winners of the 2008 Covenant Awards for Exceptional Jewish Educators. This year’s Award winners, Diana Ganger, Rabbi Yakov Horowitz, and Susan Werk, continue the tradition, now firmly established, of testifying to the rich and varied methods of transmitting Jewish values, of teaching for the sheer joy of it, and of caring deeply about the lives of the people they touch.

This year, the Covenant Foundation celebrates eighteen years of support for innovation and excellence in Jewish education—our chai year. When the Covenant Foundation was established in 1990, we dreamed of finding educators like the ones honored here today. Our goal was and still is to acknowledge the importance of a life given to Jewish education and to encourage others to follow. Eighteen years later, we are still proud to have established such a tradition and are pleased to celebrate today the achievements of three special people.

L'Shalom,

Susan Crown and Barbara Goodman Manilow

What are these?

Our Jewish tradition puts significance on this 18th anniversary, as it corresponds to the Hebrew word for life, ‘chai.’ And so we are gathered to celebrate that Tree of Life that we planted 18 years ago and to marvel at all the wonderful fruit that it has borne.” — Eli Evans, chairman of the board of directors, The Covenant Foundation
